Electrical installation testing produces a steady volume of paperwork alongside the measurements themselves: quotation requests, inspection sheets, confirmation signatures and a register of the work carried out. We have developed our own platform that handles this flow end to end, from the initial request through to the signed and filed sheet. This article sets out the functions currently in service and the next stage of development.
1. Fast quotations
For testing work, the interval between request and quotation is a decision criterion for the client. The platform captures the data needed to scope the job in structured form — type of site, number of measurement points, address, contact person — and removes the round of clarifications by telephone and e-mail that would otherwise follow.
The practical consequence is a shorter response time. The data arrives complete on first submission, and the quotation is issued against a defined scope of work rather than an approximate estimate to be corrected on site.
2. Inspection sheets signed on the device screen
The inspection sheet is completed in the application, on site, as the work proceeds. On completion the client signs in confirmation directly on the device screen, with a finger. There is no need to print the document, return later for a signature, or scan the signed copy.
The signature is bound to the sheet at the point of registration, together with the job data. The resulting document is complete by the time the team leaves the site, and the client receives it the same day.
Operational relevance: in most cases, delay in handing over documentation does not come from the duration of the measurements but from the paper document circulating between site, office and client. Removing that circuit shortens the handover time without altering the test methodology.
2.1 Sheet register management
Sheets are not isolated documents. The platform maintains a central register in which each sheet is recorded with its own number, date, site and the team that carried out the work. The functions available in the register:
- Registration and numbering — each sheet receives a sequence number on issue, with no parallel register kept by hand.
- Retrieval of previous work — identifying the sheets issued for a given site, which matters for periodic retesting and for extension work.
- Re-issue of a copy — the document can be sent to the client again without reconstructing it from a paper archive.
- Records by site and by period — the status of work carried out, as required for reporting and for planning the next round of testing.
For clients with several sites, the register is what separates a coherently documented series of jobs from a set of unrelated sheets.
3. Browser and smartphone access
The platform runs in a browser, on a computer and on a phone alike. There is nothing to install, and the sheet is completed on site from the technician's phone, using the same interface the office uses for quotations and for the register.
For the client, the consequence is that signing does not depend on a particular device: the document is signed on whichever phone or tablet is to hand at the point of handover.
4. The Android application
A native Android version is in development and will be published once testing is complete. The functions will be the same, with its own sign-in and synchronisation with the server. Until then, browser access covers the whole of the workflow described above.
Current status
The platform is in service on current testing work. A video walkthrough of the complete flow — quotation request, completing the sheet, signing and registration — is being published over the coming days on our YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn channels, including in short form.
